After graduating from university, taking months of research and hard work, I finally am acting on my gut and longtime dream to start my own business. And so I began the Curative Company!

Since launching as well as working through the months since graduation trying to find a direction after finishing my degree- I want to reflect on how and why I started this company.

Even before starting my degree at Kansas State University, I loved to create. From painting and drawing pieces for my friends and family. Experimenting with watercolor and paper collage, oil pastels and ink drawings. I have always been encouraged to create by my loved ones.

And although I loved art and sharing it with others, I wasn’t confident enough to pursue a degree or career in fine art alone.

I looked into a few different programs my senior year or high school- architecture, medical, horticulture, or dietetics. Until, I learned more about interior design studies at Kansas State- it blended my favorite things about art and acted as a direct way to help people in the future.

When I started in the interior design program at Kansas State University, I was filled with anxiety as I took my first seat in the studio. Slowly other students flooded in- filling the desks. When my professor walked in ready to start attendance, she asked each of us to introduce ourselves and share why we want to study interior design.

“I wanted to study interior design as it blends my interests in fine art into a sustainable career that betters life for people.”

When my turn came I shared that I wanted to study interior design as it blends my interests in fine art into a sustainable career that betters life for people. As I began studying, I realized there were so many intersecting subjects that influence the interior design career like environmentalism, history, government policy, and much more.

Half-way through university, I took up enough fine art credits to earn a minor in art. I really enjoyed learning from artists and building a new network of professionals and creators. This influenced a lot of my projects and design presentation style my last few years of school- while encouraging me of think about other self-starting careers I could achieve alongside being an interior designer.

I started this company to better life for people through accessible and sustainable design services, goods, and resources for you readers, as well as establish a platform to develop my voice and portfolio in art and design.

Cheers to the launch of our Virtual Interior Design Services and Home Goods shop- and much more to come!
