Dark academia and gothic styles are coming back! Appreciation of Victorian and Gothic or Gothic Revival interior design and architecture adds a sort of storytelling to your interiors.

This new series is inspired much by stylists of social media, who might create a character and exercise their creativity to style outfits that character may wear for different occasions.

But I am an interior designer after all, so I am curious as to how imagined characters might live in and style their space. And how we can develop a style translated through our homes that adds character. As much as this is an exercise in styling- this is a series focused on imaginative play and dress-up, not with clothes but with interiors, and of course I link all the Design Finds in the process.

The second installment of this series is Anti-Valentine or Gothic Academic. One who may reject Valentine’s day this year to stay in with a book and a glass of wine.

A Style All One’s Own

Inspired by the dark rooms of gothic estates, a touch of vampire aesthetics, and dark academia style libraries. Think polished hard wood floors, aged stone, and heavy dark fabrics. They want to create a dark reading nook for their nights in.

1. Shadow and Light Lounge

This reading nook brings darks and lights together. The seating selected is a modern take on the chaise lounge mimicking Victorian style sofas, with a side table to house books and rest some dramatic home decor.

2. Dark Romantic Reading Nook

This curation can be anchored in a little alcove or make for a dramatic addition to an existing space. Complete with romantic touches of velvet and florals. Add a dark print to carry the palette across the room.

3. Whimsical Window Seat

A warmer styling to next to a window or on built in benching in a home. Complete with vintage touches for a dark academia look.

4. Dark Feminine + Floral

Rich and dark colors dramatize this styling. Metal touches nod to gothic motifs and materials, and the florals and bright warm tones contrast for a feminine feel.
