Fall will be here before we know it! Don’t rush to Hobby Lobby and fill your cart with plastic pumpkins and polyester spiderwebs just yet. As we embrace the beauty of the fall season, it is essential that we also consider the impact our decor choices have on the environment. Pumpkins rot, plastic decorations are thrown away, and an over consumption of decor is seen all over America. This cycle repeats each year, contributing to a concerning pattern of excessive consumption and disposal.

If you want to disrupt the pattern this season. Consider these decor alternatives for your home this fall season, that reduce waste and promote preservation (while still being festive).

  1. Organic Options

Add some color and sculptural shapes to your interior decor. Consider picking up some pumpkins, guords, flowers, or apples from local farms or markets. Eat or compost what have picked up on your produce run, to save money, shop in season, and reduce your waste. Some produce can be less than a dollar but add a freshness to your space you won’t get with plastic decor!

2. Get Crafty

An idea that doubles as an activity as well as decor is taking up a craft. You could develop a skill, fill the cold days with activity, and share with a loved one. Some low-cost ideas could include:

  • knit or crochet placemats and door ornaments

  • paint signs and sculptures out of rocks and reclaimed wood

  • learn to felt or sew your own reusable decor

  • make candles for old jars and glass containers

This is a great option get creative while developing a tradition to share with your friends or community.

3. Look Local

People are selling or have donated decor all over your area- check local thrift stores, boutiques, and craft markets. Find unique treasures amidst the thrift store shelves. Celebrate small business booths that have perfected their craft at the local farmer or craft markets. These are the best places to find cozy candles, wood sculptures and signs, and knitted and crocheted goods. Find styles that speak to your traditions and home aesthetic.

4. Appreciate the Outdoors

Visit a local farm, park, or hiking trail and collect your season’s decor (for practically free). Unique fall leaves and pinecones fall all season long. Bring nature in for your centerpieces or mantle decor. Ditch the plastic leaves and pinecones and opt for the real thing that can also be composted at the end of the season.

5. Material Matters

Stop and think about what your decorations are made of! Plastic decor can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Consider choosing indoor and outdoor decor made of durable and long-lasting materials. Metal pumpkins on the front porch would last longer than organic or plastic pumpkins. A thrifted cotton quilt may last longer than a polyester fuzzy blanket. Try to do research before over-consuming on the featured fall decor.
