After the most bizarre interview I have ever experienced as a young design professional- I thought it an appropriate time to give a reminder on what exactly is an interior designer.

For context, an interview was conducted by architects for an architecture firm. I simply wanted to gain more architectural experience to carry with me as a designer. For presenting themselves as a forward thinking group- I was surprised the interview consisted of questions like “Why would we need you when we have architects on our team?” or “Isn’t interior design a far less rigorous course of study?” or “Why don’t you just apply to work with the decorators in town?”

I did my best to rise to the challenge, even though I quickly realized their view of my field was not going to be changed. Much to my expectation they did not hire me, but I probably dodged a bullet. Plus it made for a great blog post.

This led me to fully understand my professors’ lectures on having to fight the stigmas that are often associated with interior design- particularly of architects of a male dominated industry.

So to answer the question…

In today's fast-paced and ever-evolving world, creating a well-designed living or working space is more important than ever. It goes way beyond aesthetics– thoughtful interior design can greatly enhance our physical and mental well-being while positively impacting our planet.

In this article, we will explore the multifaceted role of an interior designer, their expertise, credentials, and how they bring immense value to various projects. We will also compare the distinct roles of interior designers, architects, and decorators, and recognize the positive impact interior designers have on their communities and the environment.

What is an Interior Designer?

At its core, an interior designer is a creative professional who transforms spaces by carefully curating and harmonizing various elements, such as colors, textures, furniture, lighting, and accessories. While their work certainly includes enhancing the aesthetics of a space, their broader focus is on maximizing functionality and improving the overall experience of inhabitants.

Credentials and Expertise

Interior designers possess a diverse range of credentials that showcase their expertise and dedication to their craft. These credentials can include:
1. Education: Many interior designers hold degrees in interior design or related fields, obtaining a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. These programs cover subjects such as space planning, color theory, architecture, and building codes and systems.

2. Licensure and Certification: In some jurisdictions, interior designers must be licensed to practice professionally. This ensures that they meet certain standards and abide by industry regulations. Additionally, certifications from reputable organizations further validate an interior designer's skills, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation for sustainable design.

3. Experience and Portfolio: A seasoned interior designer builds an extensive portfolio that showcases their past projects. Reviewing a designer's portfolio can offer insights into their versatility, style, and ability to adapt to different clients' needs.

While interior designers often collaborate with architects and decorators, their roles are distinct and complement each other. Here's how they differ:

1. Interior Designer vs. Architect: Architects are trained to handle the structural aspects of a building, focusing on safety, functionality, and overall design. In contrast, interior designers concentrate on transforming the interior spaces, optimizing their functionality and aesthetics. They bring life to a building, ensuring that the interior elements align with the architectural vision while considering the occupants' needs. Often interior designers work diligently to complete the detailed specifications and paperwork involved in a project.

2. Interior Designer vs. Decorator: Interior decorators primarily focus on aesthetics. They have a keen eye for selecting colors, patterns, fabrics, and furniture to create visually appealing spaces. While decorators can enhance the appearance of a room, interior designers go beyond that by incorporating functionality and a deeper understanding of human behavior, how structures are involved in a design, and accessibility.

The Benefits of Working with an Interior Designer

Collaborating with an interior designer brings numerous advantages to any project:
1. Holistic Approach: Interior designers specialize in creating cohesive spaces that embody the client's vision while accommodating their lifestyle needs. They consider the overall flow of a space, ensuring that each area integrates harmoniously. Interior designers are mediators between the structure, the environment, and the users.
2. Enhanced Functionality: Interior designers possess a deep understanding of ergonomics and how occupants interact with their environment. They optimize available space, ensuring efficient circulation and intuitive placement of furniture and fixtures.

3. Sustainable Design: With a growing commitment to protecting the environment, interior designers increasingly incorporate sustainable practices into their designs. They utilize eco-friendly materials, design energy-efficient spaces, and incorporate natural lighting and ventilation to reduce the environmental impact of a project.
4. Community Impact: Interior designers play a vital role in their communities by transforming public spaces, such as parks, libraries, and schools. By designing welcoming environments, they can contribute to the well-being and quality of life for the community members who utilize these spaces.

Interior designers are the masters of creating functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable spaces. With their unique blend of education, experience, and creative vision, they bring immense value to various projects. Distinct from architects and decorators, interior designers offer a holistic approach that combines functional design, beautiful aesthetics, and a deep understanding of human behavior.

By working closely with clients, they craft spaces that amplify occupants' experiences and positively impact their communities and the environment. So, whether you're renovating your home or embarking on a commercial project, consider collaborating with an interior designer to unlock the full potential of your space.
